Advocacy Group Claims to Have Extracted Countless of Music Files from the Streaming Giant

An activist group has stated to have scraped a vast number of tracks from Spotify and is getting ready to release them online.

Possible Boost for Artificial Intelligence Training

Observers noted the apparent data breach could boost AI companies looking for material to train their technology.

A group known as Anna’s Archive reported it had obtained 86 million music files from the platform and 256 million rows of associated data such as performer and record names. Spotify, which carries more than 100 million songs, stated that the leak did not constitute its full catalog.

“We have identified and deactivated the nefarious user accounts that engaged in unlawful scraping,” said a company representative.

The Stockholm-based service, which has more than 700 million subscribers worldwide, added that an inquiry into unauthorized access found a external actor collected public metadata and used illicit tactics to bypass DRM [digital rights management].

Archive's Declared Mission and Worries

Spotify does not believe the music taken by Anna’s Archive has been released yet. Anna’s Archive, which is recognized for offering links to pirated books, said in a blog it wanted to create a ‘preservation archive’ for music.

The group asserted the audio files represented 99.6% of all music listened to by Spotify users and would be distributed via ‘peer-to-peer networks’, a method of exchanging large digital files online.

“Of course the service doesn’t have all the music in the world, but it’s a fantastic beginning,” commented Anna’s Archive, which describes its mission as “safeguarding humanity’s knowledge and heritage”.

AI Training and Copyright Debate

Ed Newton-Rex for protecting artists’ copyright, remarked the breached music would likely be used for training AI models.

“Educating models on illegally sourced data is unfortunately widespread in the tech sector, so this stolen music is almost certain to end up training AI models,” he stated.

The Anna’s Archive site alludes to a large online archive, a huge online repository of copyrighted books that has allegedly been leveraged by Meta to develop its systems.

A founder of an artificial intelligence company wrote on LinkedIn that individuals of the public could in theory “build their own private free version of the service”. The executive said it could also enable technology firms to “train on modern music at a large volume”.

Intellectual property law has become a key issue between artists, authors and content creators on one side and tech giants on the other.

Policy Considerations and Reactions

Across Britain, creative professionals have raised concerns against a government proposal to let AI companies use protected work without permission unless the owner signals. Almost every participant to a government call for evidence on the idea has backed artists’ concerns.

A government minister for technology, innovation and technology told parliament this month there was “little consensus” on the matter, adding that ministers would “use the time to get this right”. The government has committed to make policy proposals on AI and copyright by March 2025.
