Approximately 35,000 individuals could be affected, cautions the United States embassy

A significant security compromise in the Federal Republic of Somalia's electronic visa system may have exposed sensitive details associated with tens of thousands of individuals, including American nationals, the United States diplomatic mission in the Somali nation has cautioned.

Officials stated obtained trustworthy accounts that "unknown cyber attackers" breached the Somali government's e-visa platform, potentially compromising data from approximately 35,000 individuals.

The exposed records distributed through digital channels comprise names, photographs, birth dates, relationship status, residential locations and email contacts, per a American diplomatic communication released on recently.

"This data breach is ongoing and potentially disclose any personal data submitted to the system," British authorities has also warned visitors.

"Assess the potential threats when considering application for a digital visa mandatory for entry into the Federal Republic."

Administrative Action

Somali authorities have not issued statements on the breach. Nevertheless authorities has shifted its visa service away from evisa.gov.so toward the new application website, without offering a formal statement.

"Although the US Embassy in Mogadishu cannot verify if personal information is included in the security incident, travelers who have requested visas for a Somali e-visa could be impacted," the official communication said.

Regional Implications

The updated visa process necessitates all travellers, incorporating applicants from the self-declared republic of Somaliland and the partially independent area of the northeastern region, to request travel visas online.

Critics say visitors have encountered additional charges in particular territories, equivalent to duplicate payments.

Geopolitical Background

The self-declared republic, that proclaimed statehood in three decades ago, manages its territory with its own institutions but has not been internationally recognised. Mogadishu authorities maintains that the region remains part of its national domain.

The claimed security incident contributes to long-running tensions involving central government and northern authorities concerning jurisdiction of national air territory. Even though Somalia restored full control of its airspace in recent years, northern authorities persistently challenges this agreement.

Ongoing Conflict

The disagreement escalated further in recent days after the northern region's leader the regional leader announced Somaliland would refuse the federal e-visa system and ordered that carriers are required to secure authorization from northern authorities when approaching its airspace.

Yet major airlines have declined to process individuals lacking Somalia's e-visa approval.

On Saturday, Somaliland's Foreign Minister the foreign minister again insisted that "every person entering the northern territory can acquire their visa upon landing", declaring Mogadishu's digital application process lacked security and cautioning that "personal information can fall into extremist organizations" due to utilizing the system.

Aviation Challenges

The stand-off has caused certain visitors heading to Hargeisa stranded at airports due to rejection at check-in because they didn't have Mogadishu's digital permit.

Somaliland's Civil Aviation Minister, the transport official, has told media outlets that the instructions - originally publicized in recent months - became operational on November 10th.

Officials declared airlines that do not comply might be directed to divert, and asserted numerous flights were previously redirected.

Aviation Authority Dispute

Recorded material distributed by Hargeisa's civil aviation authority reportedly displays regional aviation officials providing guidance to international pilots - a development applauded locally as a confirmation of Somaliland's autonomy.

However the Somalia Civil Aviation Authority maintains it possesses sole administrative and legal control regarding the Mogadishu Flight Information Region (Flight Information Region), that includes the whole nation's airspace. It has ordered every plane to ignore any guidance coming from authorities other than Mogadishu.

It warned that failing to comply with federal and global flight regulations could generate security threats and result in "significant legal repercussions".
