A recent study indicates that people who stop using new slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy can put back on lost weight at a significantly accelerated pace than those who halt conventional lifestyle plans.
Published data in a major health publication demonstrates that while overweight individuals can lose about a fifth of their total mass while on the medication, the mass comes back at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.
"Users purchasing such drugs need to be aware of the potential of rapid weight regain when the therapy is stopped," warns researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of regain means a return to pre-treatment weight in about one and a half years.
Comparing Approaches
The analysis, which examined 37 of studies involving thousands of patients, compared the results of the injectable medications with other pills.
Scientists point out that individuals who shed pounds through diet and exercise generally experience a less rapid creep back—approximately 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.
The Reason for the Fast Rebound
Experts suggest the way of the injections is key to understanding the accelerated regain.
GLP-1 drugs mimic a natural hormone called GLP-1, which controls feelings of fullness.
"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 levels far above than normal could lead to the system to produce less of its endogenous hormone, and could lessen sensitivity to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.
"Withdrawal of this hormone supplement leads to hunger is uncontrolled, making excessive eating much more probable."
A Lifelong Issue?
Medical guidelines recommend the injections for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside recommended lifestyle changes.
A number of clinicians contend that, considering the significant potential of relapse, the therapy is often ongoing.
This view is echoed by drug manufacturers, who note that the results "underscore the persistent character of excess weight," comparing it to managing diseases like high blood pressure.
Patient Experiences
Users who have come off the medication explain a powerful return of cravings.
"I experienced a switch activating and you're instantly extremely hungry," described an individual.
This challenge is worsened if individuals have not adopted permanent dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.
Growing Adoption
Figures indicate that a significant number of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with desire continuing to grow.
- Use is greater among females compared to men.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest usage rates.
- Many access the drugs through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
In conclusion, experts stress that while GLP-1 drugs are potent tools for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone solution and maintained weight loss likely depends on combined lifestyle management.
