The Gaming Giant Brings Onboard Popular Battle Royale Producer to Revitalize Troubled Action Game Project Ethos

2K Games has welcomed a seasoned producer from the creators of Apex Legends to oversee the studio crew at 31st Union, which is currently crafting the upcoming third-person roguelike extraction-shooter known as this innovative game.

Management Change Comes After Poor Response

The new appointee assumes the leadership position at the development studio following the dismissal of previous head Michael Condrey, who was removed from his post due to the game's disappointing unveiling last fall.

On Wednesday, 2K president David Ismailer informed employees about this organizational change through an official communication, which highlighted that playtesting had shown the necessity for a distinct game identity.

The president stated that the developers is now reimagining Project Ethos with a refreshed vision, aiming to address community desires.

Trend of Key Acquisitions

The news echoes a similar step taken by 2K Games in the summer, when they recruited Rod Fergusson from the Diablo team to contribute to the BioShock studio Cloud Chamber.

Below is the complete text from Ismailer's memo:

Dear Team—

I know you all just wrapped up your meeting - I hope you’re as enthusiastic as I am with the recent updates. Previously I shared you all a note, I expressed the following: “I believe in this crew. You all are some of the most dedicated and innovative developers we have had the opportunity to collaborate with - and we’re excited for that relationship to persist.”

Through your commitment and adaptability, particularly over the last year, you continue to prove that.

The community feedback from last autumn’s Project ETHOS demo was informative. It validated the appeal of a action-packed game but made clear we still had improvements to make. It revealed the necessity for a more distinct identity.

It’s been inspiring to see how far you’ve come. You took the input to consideration and overhauled the title with a renewed vision - one that’s ready to deliver on its potential to our fans.

The trust in Project ETHOS increases every day. To advance the outstanding development you’ve made, I am thrilled to welcome the new hire as the new Studio Head of the team. After a period of talks, Ben starts with us on the specified date.

Ben’s management and expertise in the PVP shooter genre is considerable, having dedicated the past decade and a half developing and managing some of the most well-known franchises in the industry, including the acclaimed shooter, and most recently, Apex Legends.

Please join me in welcoming him next week. We are all excited to continue observing the development of Project ETHOS in the weeks to ahead.

David

Background of the New Leader

Brinkman presently serves in the role of senior developer and production lead at Respawn Entertainment for Apex Legends. He previously was employed at Treyarch and Activision in various production roles on the Call of Duty games, and, before that, had periods at other industry leaders.

Game Information and Vision

Project Ethos was unveiled in October 2024 in conjunction with a community playtest. Initially, 31st Union portrayed the game as a "no-cost, 3rd-person roguelike hero shooter and an exciting evolution on the style."

"Build your perfect run—or die trying—in this 3rd-person action shooter! Customize your character in real-time to suit your personal playstyle," the game's pitch states. "Face the rivals with new abilities, challenges, and challenges that shift every session. Do you safely extract with your collected items? Alternatively go big, risk it all, and hope your team can achieve the highest spot? The choice is up to you."

Project Ethos does not have an official release date or platforms, but fans can anticipate additional details as development continues.
