The Trump movement's most telling and characteristic instances – not its most crucial, nor most brutal, nor most hazardous, nor most senseless, but perhaps its most illuminating – emerged earlier this harvest season. Over the span of multiple weeks, the US president began displaying all observers his designs for a lavish reception room double the dimensions compared to the White House and then began solo dismantling the East Wing portion to build it.
He has done things ten thousand times worse – the current estimate of fatalities due to his slashing to international aid amounts to 600,000 and increasing, and this week a study predicted his petroleum strategies would kill another 1.3 million. But nothing as definitional. No previous president would have dared – really, no previous leader would have contemplated – solo demolishing significant portions of the presidential residence to construct a Versailles-style party room, with the active collaboration of multiple America's wealthiest, almost all of whom conduct transactions with the government.
We transitioned from 'the humble will receive the planet' toward 'the gentle will succumb of cholera'
As confusing as it is to watch the leader seek to颠覆 the traditional concept of democracy and substitute it with its complete opposite, there remains a substantial portion among Americans who might not perceive it completely novel. That encompasses people such as ourselves – within elder demographics almost a majority – who were raised within mainstream Protestant traditions.
We have observed throughout the years while conservative evangelical congregations converted the Savior we learned about into exactly the opposite of who we understood him to be. Fundamentally, they turned a figure of love into a figure of animosity who approves precisely the cruelties that he criticized in scripture; this has happened at a slower pace, over decades as opposed to months, yet it remains disturbing via comparable methods, a bewildering emotional blow for countless people.
A Toxic Christianity Takes Hold
So let me first describe the Christ from my childhood, because theoretically Christ is the focus within Christian belief, and given that the rapidly expanding group within America could have minimal awareness about him since they are atheists or agnostics or spiritual independents. I take no issue with these different approaches, nor with any other faith; but I do think that contain precious wisdom of great price in the Christian story.
It is decidedly not the account of a mighty king arising; instead, a baby is born to homeless parents in a garage, who need to rapidly escape to a foreign land to evade covert authorities. The baby grows up in humble circumstances, a laboring woodworker; his message focuses on affection for fellow humans, particularly for the impoverished – and not a sentimental love, but practical compassion, shown by providing food and sheltering. Jesus' answer to aggression is to turn the additional cheek – not as an act of compliant endurance, but as a method to educate the assailant; his method regarding offenses indicates that whenever a person pilfers your outer garment you ought to provide him your sweater also.
The apparent and straightforward fact that the Jesus from scripture advocates for a type of extreme compassion focused on the poor has consistently rendered Christianity somewhat of a provocative belief system: appealing to the masses, but owing to its inherent radicalness needing to be controlled. During the 1950s it was controlled by dilution – The Protestant faith was so prevalent that it practically baptized the status quo.
A Struggle for the Best Among Us
Hence I have become inspired to see the persistent defiance to Trump develop during the previous year. It has been significant comfort to help build the movement that has demonstrated publicly in rally after rally, and likely has encouraged voters to turn out in numbers in the off-year elections. We will need to continue it, and through comparable resolve, with American flags at every demonstration and calls to the best parts of American history.
We're going to be asked ... regarding how you welcomed the immigrant? Did you receive him and embrace them or refuse?
The country is optimally secured, essentially, through connection to the best within national tradition, just as Christianity is most protected by reference to that which renders it unique and wonderful, specifically the model of Jesus. In both situations does it mean feigning the most negative about the nation and Christianity never occurred; it represents both meekness and conviction, a blend that committed American Christians should be comfortable with.
